1 : drawing skills
Students experiment with simple mark making, texture and tone. They go on to improve their basic drawing skills. Students also look at a wide variety of artists’ drawings.
This unit of work builds on drawing skills developed during KS2, formally teaching students how to draw, measure and add tone work.

2 : colour, painting & composition
Students are introduced to colour theory. The learn how to mix, blend and paint accurately. Students then look at composition and learn how to produce a ‘gridded enlargement’ and still-life painting. Students also look at how colour has been used in a wide variety of artwork.
This unit of work builds on painting skills developed during KS2, formally teaching students how to mix and blend paint, match colour and add detail to work. The unit of work also builds on drawing skills developed in unit 1 : drawing, showing showing students how to measure and enlarge an image using a grid.

3 : portraiture (drawing & sculpture)
Students look at different approaches to portraiture. They then produce an accurate self-portrait drawing. Students also look at a wide variety of artists’ portrait work.
Students also develop their self-portrait into three-dimensions, learning clay-modelling and sculpting techniques.
This unit of work builds on drawing skills developed in unit 1 : drawing, formally teaching students the proportions of the human face and how to add increasingly levels of detail to drawings. The unit of work also teaches students the characteristics of clay, modelling and sculpting using a variety of tools and techniques.
