Year 7 - Colour Unit

Lesson 1
Classwork : On the paper provided (see picture below), students draw a triangle (side should be about 5cm) and a ‘splodge’ shape. Then paint the triangle ‘ultramarine blue’ and the splodge ‘vermilion red’. Students should only make one attempt at this first painting exercise.
Students then watch the video below and use the skills described to paint a perfect triangle and ‘splodge’ for homework. Make as many attempts as needed and your supply of paper allows.
First Shape Painting Demonstration
Homework : Books will be collected to mark. However students must paint a perfect triangle and ‘splodge’ for homework. Remember the triangle is ‘ultramarine blue’ and the slodge ‘vermilion red’. Students need to bring in their paints and brushes. Students may also wish to watch the ‘Splodge and Triangle Paintings - Assessment Examples’ video below.

Lesson 2
Classwork : For the first part of the lesson students students stick in first triangle and ‘splodge' painting and also the best. There is also a ‘Top Tips’ for painting handout and a skills evaluation exercise to complete.
In the second part of the lesson the ‘Artists’ Colour Handout’ should be stuck in sketchbooks. Students watch the ‘Artists Colour Slide Show’ video below and make notes on the handout about the different artists (as they did previously for the ‘Artists Drawings Slide Show). Teachers may choose to pause the video briefly between artists.

Homework: Students complete any unfinished classwork (the triangle and ‘slodge’ top tips and explanation paragraph, as well as the notes from the ‘Artists Colour Slide Show’ video above). Students should also watch the ‘Colour Theory and Matching’ video below and complete the colour matching exercise on the worksheet.

Lesson 3
Classwork : Students watch the ‘Colour Mixing 1’ video below and then paint the two blue sections. Students have already been given this paper. Don’t forget to test and practice painting on scrap paper before painting these two blue sections.

Homework : Students should watch the ‘Colour Mixing 2’ video below and then paint the two green sections. Remember you are not allowed to use green, but must mix the colours as demonstrated in the video. Don’t forget to test and practice painting on scrap paper before painting these two green sections.

Lesson 4
Classwork : Students watch the ‘Colour Mixing 3’ video below and then paint the blended the blue and green sections as shown. Remember you are not allowed to use green but must mix the colours as demonstrated in the video. Don’t forget to test and practice painting and blending on scrap paper before painting these two sections.

Homework : Complete painting blended the blue and green sections as shown in the video above.
Lesson 5
Classwork : Students watch the ‘Colour Mixing 4’ video below and then paint the long blended strip of colours. Use the colours exactly as shown in the video. Don’t forget to test and practice painting and blending on scrap paper before painting these two sections. Finally students should stick the final painting exercise on the next page in sketchbooks (the is on the page after the triangle and ‘splodge’ paintings).

Homework : Complete painting the long blended strip of colours as shown in the ‘Colour Mixing 4 - Blending Colours’ video.
Some students may also be asked to improve the previous blending exercise form Lesson 4 homework.
Lesson 6
Classwork : Students make any necessary improvements to the Colour Mixing Exercise and then complete the Rate Your Painting Skills self-evaluation exercise.
Homework : Students complete classwork (improvements to the Colour Mixing Exercise and the the Rate Your Painting Skills self-evaluation exercise). They then revise for the Artists’ Colour Test. There are two practice tests below. Remember there will be 20 questions and 5 bonus questions. The pass mark is 80%.
